BM Featured AM: Ki Realer

Every once in a while we find an am worth mentioning and Ki Realer is one of them. Well, this is the first am we've ever featured but what the hell. Pros aren�t the only one ones defining skateboarding dammit. Ki lives in South Philly in a big crazy house with roommates and his girl and two dogs and there's a really nice lady down the street who gives blowjobs for only $5. Oh, and if anybody wants to hook him up with a place to live in Arizona then drop us a line. Or just look for him on Myspace. Search for "gonna be pro soon" or something. Always adapting, innovating, progressing. That about sums up Bobby Puleo. He manages to keep people guessing with his fresh tricks and obscure spots. He also stays clear of the industry limelight, making his photos or video parts gems that leave the kids craving for more. Bobby has always let his skateboarding speak for him, now Bobby speaks about his skateboarding.

Mental Minutes: Major Label, Big Changes

In as many days we have 2 skateboard companies making major changes. The former having kicked the proverbial bucket and the latter having made major team adjustments in an obvious - and stated - attempt to move forward positively. Black label is one of my all time favs, now with a major ~~face~~teamlift and some fresh shredders - pro and am alike - for 2006.

Ever since I heard the unconfirmed rumor that one of the best men in skateboarding, Joey Tershay, was terminated as Independent Trucks team manager by - reportedly - Fausto's son, I have been wanting to flame him in the worst way. I'm going to here, but one must remember that I can't confirm it was him that did the axeing. Either way, it's worth a rant. Fuck it. Flame on...

Mental Minutes: Rasa Libre, Up In Smoke.

Their website is down, any attempt to find their products for sale online leads to a "product not available" message, and even the Suicide Girls are sayng that Rasa Libre has, to borrow from Chong, gone up in smoke. Deluxe has now confirmed this with the press release below (Thanks Thurston.)

New PBS Show...Skateparks Reviewed?

Yeah, yeah we know. More than 12 million people ride or own skateboards...Yada yada...Another one million will pick up the sport this year alone...yada yada...So now PBS is set to, uh, report on this "growning trend" by airing a skatepark review show. A trailer for the still unnamed show was found on female skater Felicity Corral's website.

Mental Minutes: Heddings Convicted

Riverside County Superior Court website says the jury reached a verdict yesterday. Heddings found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, not murder. Pinky was found guilty of murder and child abuse resulting in death. They will be sentenced in January. Look inside for an added opinion, and some general bitching.

Real men ride 60s�centimeters, that is.

One day, maybe three years ago, a kid cruised into the skate shop I managed in one of the most high-tech wheelchairs I�ve ever seen. Since he was obviously handicapped and not more than twelve years old, I couldn�t believe how well he was navigating the tight arrangements of racks and tables. There was an older kid with him, walking perfectly fine and dandy�his brother I gathered.

With all the corporate buyouts, celebrity endorsements, and super x-treme stunts in skateboarding today, it�s easy to loose sight of what it�s really all about. Steve Rodriguez, owner of 5boro, seems to be one of the few who hasn�t forgotten why he started skating in the first place. (the only reason he even did this interview was because he broke his kingpin and couldn�t skate)

Ed Templeton is truly a skate legend; he�s done it all. Won contests, run multiple companies, influenced the look of skateboarding (both artistically and stylistically) and if you�re a skateboarder, he�s probably influenced you in one way or another. Coming from humble beginnings and a broken home, he found acceptance in the outcast world of skateboarding. He then set himself apart from the mainstream with his style of skating, clothes, music he put in his video parts and the art on his boards and in his ads. Ed redefined skateboarding and helped set the standard for what is expected of today�s pros.

It's not often that the skateboarding community gets to call someone who appeared on the cover of TIME magazine an ally and friend. It's even more seldom that an artist would come to the defense of skateboarders using his work as a skate spot. Edmund Bacon, architect of Philedelphia's Love Park and father of actor Kevin Bacon, passed away at the age of 95 on Oct. 14. Mr. Bacon was just such an individual, and should be remembered as a patron of arts of all varieties - a groundbreaking city planner, architect, artist and, above all, an excellent person.
