Do you eat meat? Do you care about the treatment of animals in meat processing plants and chemical labs? Do you skate? My guess regarding those answers is Yes, No and Yes respectively, but then again I could be wrong. You probably aren't even aware of how that juicy cheeseburger you just ate got in your scab covered hands, or what happened in the process however. Well, PETA wants to fill you in, and they're doing so via an offshoot website called PETA2.com that seeks to grab you little bastards why you're still young and - in some cases - guilt trip you into eating brussell sprout sandwiches before you take to shredding.
With features such as "peta2 tv", "peta2 radio" and interviews and giveaways with skaters like Scott Bourne, Ed Templeton and Brad Staba, PETA is creating a presence in "Action Sports" and using the philosophies of these peeps to influence the crap you stuff in your face, you guiltless fat-fat-fattypants.
Where they start to take it too far - in this skater's opinion - is when they begin to make statements like "It takes a small person to beat a defensless animal, and an even smaller one to eat it", in this PETA Promotional Video. I hope they're not talking about Pancho there. I like Pancho, as far as I know he doesn't work at a meat packing plant, and what's with picking on little people? But seriously, there's some harsh shit in that video my friends. Treatment of animals that seems completely and totally unnecessary. Makes me feel like a complete pile for eating meat, which happens to be the goal. Statements like that are simply too general to be taken seriously though. Does your dad work at a grocery store? Does he buy you skatbeoards? Let's see how many new decks you get after he loses his job because of some law that cripples the American economy. For christ's sake, you probably drink Coke, eat at Mcdonald's and wear leather shoes too. That doesn't make you a bad person. Don't get me wrong, I admire what they're trying to do, but they need to refrain from the same brainwashing techniques their arch rivals in the meat industry use. I know I know, all's fair right? Gotta fight fire with fire? That's BS, and a sad excuse for an argument.
So the next time you're skating, think about all the trees that died to make your skateboard. While you're at it, think about whether or not the lacquer they clear coated that board with was tested on some unsuspecting chimp...maybe even that one that skates. Hypocrisy is part of life and - increasingly - part of skateboarding. Try to still have some fun while you're here.
